Torre Cabrera
The most southern area of Sicily is occupied by a seaside resort and maritime port titled Pozzallo. This commune integrated by the province of Ragusa is neighbored by the sea which makes up a highly desirable holiday destination. The Mediterranean and the Iblei plateau mark this beautiful place that is flourished by a coastline which is limited by Punta Raganzino and the sandy beaches of Marza.
Bordered by the sea, Pozzallo lived a long and fruitful life of exploitation. Beginning with 1296 the area began its expansion, an
initiative of Counts of Modica who began developing the harbor as a commercial landmark that mostly aimed at Malta.
There is no doubt that Pozzallo holds significant monuments. Not only history represents an attraction but the natural reserve also. In addition, the scenery gathers splendid images that made proper background for many movies that have been filmed in the area. The churches, the Villa Tedeschi (the first of 900 and the summer residence of the Marquis), the Natural Reserve Macchia Forest River Irminio, the Archaeological Museum of Kamarina, they each present particular characteristics that add up to their uniqueness. Complementarily, the near-by Baroque of Val di Noto marks the area due to its archaeological importance.
The Cabrera Tower gets its own spotlight, especially if you are a fan of the pirates. Built in the 14th century, this 98 foot high tower that dates from the 1429 was the initiative of Count of Modica, Giovanni Bernardo Cabrera. The original purpose of the construction sighted the possibility of defending the town from pirates’ attacks. The gist of the plan was to defend the warehouses of the town by constructing this fortress on the sea.
A presently visible fresco outlines the chapel “Santa Maria della Pieta” that used to be a part of the fortress, but only until
1715. The site does get a bit morbid since the construction provided an area for death-row prisoners, an area that received a suggestive name, Pozzo della Morte.
The town compels both architecture/ art lovers and water embracers. One can stream among the beautiful Liberty architecture displays, passing by wide avenues and palm trees, reaching the seaside. Divers should know that the beaches of Pozzallo encourage sea lovers to undertake their passion. Diving and kite surfing are no strangers to this part of the island. The water is perfect for this kind of explorations.
It does sound like a piece of heaven, doesn’t it? Maybe because it really is. And there is no way you should miss out on this one.
